What is Soulbooking? It’s all about YOU!

You!What is soul booking? It is a simple, inexpensive, meditative, and reflective tool to draw deeper into the center of your authentic self.  It is endlessly rewarding, playful and creative. And yes, it’s easy and you don’t have to have any artistic talent.

Materials:

  • An artist’s sketch book, or if you prefer, a large scrap booking album. I use both types depending upon my mood, or the size of the images I want to work with. Whatever you choose, make sure it is at least 8 1/2″ by 11″ and has lots of pages to grow!
  • Images. Cut images from magazines. Catalogues. Postcards. Pictures. The images can come from anywhere ~ but not just any images. Only images that draw you in, pull you towards them, make you feel “possessive” of them with a feeling of, “I have to have it! That one is mine!”
  • If you draw or take photographs, use your own images!
  • Quotations or Words. You can cut phrases out of magazines, or you can add your own as you go! I do both.
  • If you write, use your own writing, poetry, essays!
  • Your imagination. Honesty. Emotions. Thoughts. Dreams. Questions. Memories.
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick

Ready to Get Started?

Soulbooking for the first time is a little like getting into the ocean for a swim. There is more than one way to get wet! Which type of swimmer are you? Depending upon what your style is ~ there are two ways to go.

Technique #1

Perhaps you are a “dip your toes in first” kind of swimmer who likes to get adjusted to the temperature and feel of the water a little at a time. In that case, you might like to focus on a theme for your page. Here are a few of the “prompts” I would use in a class to get your feet wet.  Choose pictures based on one of the following themes:

The Child I Was

Sanctuary Places

What my Heart Loves

My Gifts and Talents

When you have the pictures you want for your page, arrange them in a way that is pleasing to you (and only you, remember this is your soul book.) Now write to the theme. Put words to the emotions  that come up when you look at these images. Add your words to the pages. There! Now you have your first soul book page and you can start on another! Most people can’t wait to create more pages when they realize how much they have to explore.

Technique #2

Perhaps you dive into the ocean head first thrilled with the exhilarating rush of refreshing salt water soaking your skin? In that case, you might prefer not to be gently led, but instead to dive into the images at random, choosing one to three to begin with, that call to you for reasons you may not even have figured out yet. When you have your images, sit quietly with them for a few minutes, entering into them with your imagination and heart, and see what they have to tell you. Take pen to paper, and write for at least ten minutes without stopping on these images.  What is this image saying? When you are finished, you will have your first soul book page ~ a surprise revelation from an unassuming image that shows you how much you have inside of you that is yet unspoken!
